Shirley M. Bishop, 88, of Butler, went to be with the Lord early Tuesday morning, Nov. 5, 2024, at Butler Memorial Hospital.

Shirley was born in Butler on April 4, 1936. She was the daughter of the late Clifford A. and Ethel E. Sweeney Greenert.

She was a 1954 graduate of Butler Area High School and was a member of the high school’s first women’s basketball team. In her earlier years, Shirley had attended the North Street Christian Church and later attended the Grace Lutheran Church in Butler, and enjoyed attending home Bible studies. Shirley had also voted in every general election for the last 56 years and was inducted into the Pennsylvania Voter Hall of Fame in 2019. She enjoyed cooking and baking and was a devoted homemaker. Shirley most especially enjoyed the company of her grandkids and her endearing friendships.

Shirley had been employed at the Butler Savings Bank, was a secretary for nine years at Wingart Trucking, and a holiday cashier at Walmart.

She was preceded in death by her husband, John Coulter Bishop, whom she married in Washington, Pa. on Sept. 2, 1966. Mr. Bishop preceded her in death on Nov. 18, 2009.

Surviving are two sons, Scott Bishop of Newport, Mich. and Aaron Bishop and his wife, Kimberly, of Chicora; a number of grandchildren and numerous great-grandchildren; two daughters-in-law, Susan Bishop of Hermitage and Rebecca “Becky” Bishop of Virginia Beach, Va.; two sisters, Betty Jo Smith of Butler and Nancy Wagner and her husband, Richard “Rick” of Cabot; a sister-in-law, Sandy Greenert of Saxonburg; as well as a number of nieces, nephews and cousins.

In addition to her parents and husband, Shirley was preceded in death by a brother, Clifford Raymond “Butch” Greenert.

BISHOP — A private funeral service for Shirley M. Bishop, who died Tuesday, Nov. 5, 2024, is under the direction of HILE FUNERAL HOME, Emlenton.

Interment will be in the Emlenton Cemetery.

The family requests memorial contributions in lieu of flowers be made to a local Meals on Wheels.
