Man charged with gun possession
A Butler man is facing gun possession charges after police found a gun while tracking him as he fled from an officer.
Butler city police charged Jedediah L. Owens-Vickers, 32, with felony counts of person not to possess firearms and firearms not to be carried without a license on Oct. 31 following a June 12 incident.
An office spotted Owens-Vickers walking along Hansen Avenue near Whitestown Road, knew he was wanted on a warrant for simple assault and told him to not move, according to an affidavit.
After he fled through a yard, a K-9 was brought in to track him. The K-9 began tracking him beginning from his last known location and located a gun. Police noted the grass where the gun was found was wet, but the side of the gun facing up was dry, which indicated the gun was recently discarded there.
Owens-Vickers was located but became threatening toward officers and didn’t obey commands, so police used a Taser to subdue him and take him into custody, according to an affidavit.
State police crime lab testing found multiple DNA profiles on the gun, but determined that the DNA is 630,000 times more likely to have come from Owens-Vickers and three unknown individuals than from four unknown and unrelated people, according to the affidavit.
Police added that Owens-Vickers was prohibited from possessing a firearm because he was wanted on an active warrant.
