Mauled by Mars
ADAMS TWP — D.J. Cannon passed for 223 yards and three touchdowns and Billy Bair rushed for 215 yards and two scores as Mars methodically mauled visiting Summit Academy, 34-6, in Tri-County North action Friday night.
Behind the 1-2 punch of Cannon and Bair, the Planets outgained the Knights by a whopping 527-191 advantage in total yardage.
That's not all that shocking when you consider Mars entered the game with a Butler County-best average of 388.9 total yards per game.
Summit Academy (3-5, 3-4), meanwhile, was right on par. The Knights entered the game with a 190.9 per-game average.
Mars (7-1, 6-1) had 285 yards of offense and a 21-0 lead at halftime Friday night.
"This may not have been our best game of the season, but it was pretty close to being a perfect performance," Mars coach Scott Heinauer said.
That performance came at an appropriate time.
Friday's win assured Mars of its 11th WPIAL playoff berth in Heinauer's 15 seasons as head coach.
"We felt like it was important that we threw the ball well and ran the ball well tonight because that's what we're going to need to be able to do in the playoffs," Heinauer said, "so we are very satisfied with the balance we had tonight."
Summit Academy head coach Steve Sherer was at a loss for words when it came time to analyzing his team's performance.
"What can I really say? We got outplayed," he said. "Mars took it to us.
"I'm disappointed with my team's effort," he added. "I don't think we are really 20-some points less talented than Mars, but we played like it tonight."
"Summit Academy is a much improved football team from past years," he said. "Steve's done an excellent job bringing that program along."
Mars took the opening kickoff and marched 80 yards in 12 plays to take a 7-0 lead.
Cannon connected with Josh Keil for a 37-yard touchdown on a fourth-and-14 play to cap the drive.
Summit Academy moved to the Mars 49-yard line on the ensuing possession before the drive stalled.
Mars responded with another 12-play scoring drive, this one covering 82 yards, to push the advantage to 14-0 with 9:43 left in the second period.
Carroll Smith's tightrope walk along the back of the end zone while hauling in a 14-yard pass from Cannon culminated the march.
Cannon was intercepted on the next Mars drive, then engineered a five-play, 52-yard drive to stake the Planets to a 21-0 advantage.
Bair capped the drive with a 3-yard run with 1:56 left in the first half.
Bair, who rushed 27 times in the game, scored his second TD on a 15-yard run midway through the third period to cap a seven-play, 58-yard march.
Cannon hit a wide-open Matt Kennedy in full stride for a 63-yard TD with 3:42 left in the third stanza to account for the final Mars points.
Summit Academy averted the shutout by marching 56 yards in seven plays on the drive following the Cannon-to-Kennedy TD pass.
The big play on the drive was a 38-yard pass completion from Stephen Grandison to Ali Ellis that set up a first-and-goal situation at the Mars 2.
The Planets hope to lock up first place in the Tri-County North next Friday when they travel to Mohawk for a 7:30 p.m. game.
Summit Academy travels to Cornell next Friday.
