island?
It's not just the island, though. The neighborhood is merely a symptom of the problem that's affecting our community. That problem is heroin. It's everywhere. Institute Hill. Main Street. Those cute suburban houses in Center Township before you get to the mall. The drugs don't discriminate. True, it may be in higher concentration on the island because it's cheap housing and it's easier for drug addicts to live there because of that. But what good would tearing it down do? It would simply lead to a lot of homeless, hardworking citizens AND homeless drug addicts. It would just spread the symptoms more evenly than lumping them in one section around Father Marinara Park or South Chestnut Street. I live in a "nice" section of town, and two weeks ago my car was broken into. They didn't take my cell phone, my CD player, the tools in the backseat or any of the schoolbooks I had in the car. Know what they took? The random change and few dollars scattered around my car, plus they dropped their pack of cigarettes near my driver's seat. Drug addicts looking for money. Yes, it's sad what's happening in our town, but please, don't blame the neighborhood. It's the drugs within the neighborhood that's the real problem, and that's going to be a tough one to fix.
