SRU sets stage for arts series

The Capitol Steps will bring political satire to Slippery Rock University in the 2008-09 Performing Arts Series.
Performances start Sept. 12 and include music, satire

SLIPPERY ROCK — Another renowned group of singers, comedians and dancers will highlight Slippery Rock University's 2008-09 Performing Arts Series.

The four shows are the Capitol Steps; The Four Freshmen; Pastures of Plenty, Woody Guthrie tribute; and Dublin's Traditional Irish Cabaret.

SRU launched the Performing Arts Series four years ago to bring quality arts entertainment to the region.

An added attraction, which is not part of the series but is offered for families, is the musical "If You Give a Pig a Pancake and Other Story Books." The musical combines eight children's stories into one performance.

All four shows begin at 7:30 p.m. in SRU's Miller Auditorium. The family event begins at 7 p.m.

The series opens Sept. 12 with Capitol Steps, which began as a group of U.S. Senate staffers who set out to satirize Washington, D.C., politicians.

The group's newest album is titled "Campaign and Suffering."

It includes parodies of the presidential candidates, such as "When I'm 84," "Obama meets Osama" and "Hillary's Way."

The Four Freshmen will bring its vocal harmonies to campus for a holiday show Dec. 6.

The SRU Jazz Ensemble will be featured in this show. The group is celebrating its 60th anniversary this year.

The music of Woody Guthrie, the folk legend who wrote "This Land is Your Land," will be celebrated by Pastures of Plenty Feb. 6.

The group pays tribute to Guthrie through music, dance and song. Guthrie's daughter Nora Guthrie produces the show.

Dublin's Traditional Irish Cabaret rounds out the series March 21 with traditional Irish music, humor and dance.

The performance stars Irish comedian Noel V. Ginnity and features vocalists, dancers and award-winning musicians.

Orders will be filled on a first-come, first-serve basis.
