DUI suspected in 5-car crash
HARMAR TWP, Allegheny County — A Butler County man was drunk and driving the wrong way late Friday night, state police said, when his car collided with another car, touching off a five-vehicle crash that injured three people.
David C. Barry, 35, of Sarver was arrested for suspicion of driving under the influence after the crash on Route 28, about a mile south of exit 11.
Barry was hospitalized at UPMC Presbyterian in Pittsburgh with a head injury. His condition was not known this morning.
Two other drivers, including another Butler County man, also needed hospital treatment for their injuries.
Police said Barry was southbound in the northbound lane when his 2009 Nissan Maxima traveled into the path of an oncoming 2007 Dodge Caliber driven by 34-year-old Michael D. Berry of Pittsburgh.
Barry and Berry both swerved their cars to the right to avoid a head-on collision but each vehicle hit a Jersey barrier.
The Nissan spun back into the left lane of Route 28 and struck a 2005 Chevrolet Equinox driven by Cody L. Craig, 24, of Chicora.
Barry’s car continued south hitting a 2005 Toyota Scion that James E. Carney, 35, of Springdale, Allegheny County, was driving, police said. The collision forced the Toyota onto a guardrail.
Still traveling south, the Nissan hit a 1995 Chevrolet Silverado pickup driven by Bethany M. Bouchard, 23, of Creighton, Allegheny County.
Police said Barry’s car finally stopped after slamming into a guardrail on the right side of Route 28 northbound.
Craig and his passenger, Cara Fazzino, 35, of Butler, were treated at UPMC Presbyterian for minor injuries. Carney also was treated at UPMC Presbyterian for a leg injury. All were later released.
Police noted that Barry refused a police chemical test to determine his blood-alcohol content following the crash, which remains under investigation.
