Dunbar Center moving

Benefactor donation will help relocation

Directors of the Paul Laurence Dunbar Community Center are negotiating with an unnamed benefactor for a donation that would allow the center to move to a new location.

Kate Folmer, Dunbar's executive director, said this morning there aren't many details she can reveal or confirm as the negotiations are continuing.

News of the benefactor was discussed at Monday's West End Revitalization meeting as Perry O'Malley answered questions about a new community center planned for the Island Playground area.

O'Malley, executive director of the Butler Count Housing and Redevelopment Authority and interim executive director of the city's Redevelopment Authority, explained the Dunbar Center is not expected to join other community agencies in the new center as the anonymous benefactor wants Dunbar to have its own facility.

Folmer said that is part of the negotiations.

She said the Dunbar board has been looking for years to relocate from its small Pillow Street building to the Island neighborhood, but that no suitable location has been found.

"Nothing has ever offered us the space that we need, and if the new location doesn't have room for outdoor play area, we would like it to be close to one," Folmer said.

She said negotiations with the benefactor should be completed in June.
