Slippery Rock Township tables action on new Dollar General

Slippery Rock Township’s board of supervisors tabled action on approving plans for a new Dollar General on Centreville Pike during a meeting Tuesday, Nov. 12.

SLIPPERY ROCK TWP — Supervisors tabled action on approving plans for a new Dollar General on Centreville Pike following advice from their planning commission during a meeting Tuesday, Nov. 12.

Planning commission chairman Tracy Frampton said the developers have brought plans for the new Dollar General location to the township’s attention only in the last few months.

“We decided not to do any conditional approval at this point,” Frampton said. “We’re just waiting for them to come back to us.”

Frampton says there still are some issues left to be resolved before the township can take action on the new store. For instance, the developers still are waiting on some necessary permits they need to receive before they can begin construction.

“They’re still waiting on their highway occupancy permit from PennDOT, and a bunch of other additional information needs to be shown on the plan,” Frampton said.

At previous planning commission meetings, nearby residents raised questions about potentially distracting lighting from the building’s loading dock, so the developers agreed to add deflectors to the plans for the area.

Questions also have been raised from nearby residents regarding the developers’ plans to address stormwater on the property.

“There were a few residents and neighbors that were here, and their concern was mostly the stormwater runoff from it because there are some springs that feed down that way,” Frampton said.

The new Dollar General would be near the site of the former Red Rock Falls restaurant, which closed in the summer of 2020 at the height of the COVID-19 pandemic. The fate of the building, which formerly was a one-room schoolhouse, is up in the air, according to Frampton.

“We asked about what's going to happen to the schoolhouse,” Frampton said. “I guess it’s in pretty bad shape, so (the developers’) plan is just to demolish it. We suggested that they contact the historical society if there’s anything in there.”
