PITTSBURGH — The Steelers resume voluntary offseason workouts next week, but it's unclear whether suspended quarterback Ben Roethlisberger will be allowed to participate.

On April 21, NFL commissioner Roger Goodell suspended the two-time Super Bowl winner for the first six games of the season and also ordered him to undergo a behavioral evaluation following a March incident in which a 20-year-old college student accused him of sexual assault in Milledgeville, Ga. The case will not be prosecuted.

The Steelers are not certain when Roethlisberger might be cleared by Goodell to resume workouts. Voluntary practices are scheduled for May 18 to 20, May 25 to 27, June 1 to 3 and June 8 to 10.

PITTSBURGH — Steelers wide receiver Limas Sweed was placed on the injured reserve list because of a torn left Achilles tendon, a move that means he cannot play this season.Sweed was waived after he was hurt during a May 2 minicamp practice. He was placed on the reserve/injury list after clearing waivers.Sweed, a second-round draft pick from Texas in 2008, missed the final two games of last season for personal reasons. He finished the season with one catch.To replace Sweed, the Steelers signed wide receiver Isaiah Williams, who signed with Baltimore as an undrafted rookie last year but was cut before the season began.

GROVE CITY — Two Grove City College track and field athletes will compete in the Eastern College Athletic Conference Division III Championships Thursday and Friday in Springfield, Mass.Junior sprinter Kate Balmer will compete in the 100 and 200 meters while senior Matt Six will compete in the shot put and discus.Balmer owns the school record in the 100 (12.51 seconds) and 200 (26.30) while Six owns the school mark in the discus at 161 feet, 4 inches.

MONROEVILLE — The Pittsburgh Pride Girls U-14 fast-pitch softball team, which is based in Zelienople, won a National Softball Association World Series qualifier recently.The team won an American Softball Association qualifier earlier and is eligible for both national tournaments.Team members include Abbi Smithmyer, Alyssa Panza, Cassie Bachik, Sammy Crilley, Natalie Milas, Bridgette Shaffer, Alexa Sisko, Danielle Voytko, Megan Davis and Britni Brandstetter.Coaches are Jay Crilley, Ed Milas, Jerry Smithmyer and Fred Brandstetter.

SLIPPERY ROCK — The Slippery Rock University men's and women's track and field teams will compete in the PSAC Championships Thursday through Saturday at West Chester.The Rock women, ranked 19th nationally, are four-time defending PSAC champions, though 10th-ranked Shippensburg is the favorite this year. Knoch graduate Sarah Reppermund is ranked fifth in the PSAC in the pole vault.On the men's side, Butler graduate Mason McLaughlin runs a leg of SRU's 1,600-meter relay, which is ranked sixth in the conference. Slippery Rock High graduate Ethan Geisler is sixth in the league in the 400-meter hurdles.
