David 'Guff' Wiegand
David D. "Guff" Wiegand, 72, of Mars died Tuesday morning at his home.
Born in Pittsburgh, July 25, 1937, he was the son of the late James W. and Emlyn Mathiott Wiegand.
Guff graduated in 1962 with a bachelor's degree in education from Salem College. While there, he played football from 1958 to 1962, playing halfback and safety. He was All Conference for all four years and All American his last two years. He was a 1962 draft pick for the San Francisco 49ers.
He continued his education at West Virginia University, where he graduated in 1966 with a master's degree in education.
He was a school teacher for the Seneca Valley School District, where he taught high school physical education and history.
He was a member of the Mars United Methodist Church.
He had served in the U.S. Marine Corps and was a member of the Mars VFW Post 7505.
Surviving are his son, David J. Shaffer, M.D., and his wife Janice, of Wellsburg, W.Va.; his grandchildren, Elizabeth Oliver and her husband, Rick, and Jennifer, Erica and Claire Shaffer; and his great-grandchild, Carter Oliver. Also surviving are a sister, Reta King in Alabama; and two brothers, J. Mark Wiegand of Mars and Daniel V. Wiegand (Karen) of Greentree.
He was preceded in death by his sister, Rebecca Wiegand.
