College roundup: BC3 women’s volleyball loses in NJCAA first round, will play in consolation bracket

Butler County Community College women’s volleyball’s shot at a national championship came to an end Thursday in the National Junior College Athletic Association Division III tournament.

The No. 6 Pioneers fell 3-1 against 11th-ranked DuPage in the first round in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. DuPage, which won the national championship two years ago, won by set scores of 25-13, 17-25, 25-19, 25-14.

Freshman middle hitter Josie Russo (Freeport) and freshman outside hitter Dakota Weldon led the Pioneers with seven kills apiece, while freshman Anora Robare (Slippery Rock) dished out 18 assists.

BC3 (22-2) is not done for the season; it plays a consolation game Friday at 11 a.m. ET against No. 14 Monroe-Bronx. BC3 can win three more games to finish as high as ninth.

The Pioneers started the season 22-0 before losing for the first time two weeks ago in an NJCAA district championship.

DuPage went on to beat No. 3 Finger Lakes 3-0 in the quarterfinals Thursday afternoon and will face second-seed Minnesota West in Friday’s semifinals.
