Scouts work lauded
EVANS CITY — A pair of plucky young men are making their hometown just a little bit better.
Mayor Dean Zinkhann at the Monday council meeting presented a large Evans City flag to Domenek McGill, 16, as a thank you for planning his Eagle Scout project at the public library.
McGill will install a new flagpole for the American flag in front of the library on South Jackson Street.
“He also works as a life guard at the (EDCO Park) pool, and he is a very nice young man,” Zinkhann said.
McGill will start the work at the end of August or beginning of September.
Zinkhann and the council also thanked scout Josh Weltner, 17, at the meeting.
Both scouts are members of Troop 399 out of St. Mathias Church in the borough.
Weltner built a large covered sandbox at EDCO Park for his Eagle Scout project.
Weltner also repaired, stained and painted a number of benches at the park that had begun to disintegrate.
He thanked the council for allowing him to complete his project in the borough.
“‘I learned a lot throughout that process, and it was a great opportunity,” Weltner told the council.
Both young men received hearty thanks and a round of applause from the council as well as those who attended the meeting.
Also at the meeting, EDCO Park Authority President John Rogers told the council that a fundraiser will be held each month in an effort to raise the money needed to match a county grant.
The grant will pay for much-needed repairs at the EDCO Park pool.
Rogers said many residents have come forward to volunteer to oversee a fundraiser. He said many and varied ideas were brought up.
“The community’s getting involved,” said a delighted Rogers.
