Annual Kaleidoscope Festival set for return

Kevin Locke, a Native American dancer, will help kick off this year's Kaleidoscope Arts Festival when he presents "Hoop of Life" at 8 p.m. April 14 in the West Gym on campus.

SLIPPERY ROCK — The annual Kaleidoscope Arts Festival at Slippery Rock University will take place April 14 to 25 with a myriad of multicultural events. Major highlights include:

April 14• Opening celebration on the quad, 4 to 8 p.m. Local bands will be featured, plus a picnic dinner by AVI. Rain location is Boozel Dining Hall. Cost for the dinner is $6 for the public, or SRU students can use their meal plan. Bands include Shots of Jack from 4 to 5 p.m., Papa Steve and His Happy Little Balls from 5 to 6 p.m., Wine and Spirit from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m., and SRU Afro-Colombian Dance Group and SRU Dance Express from 6 to 6:30 p.m.• String ensemble, 7:30 p.m. in Swope Music Hall. Cost is $3 for general admission; free for SRU students.• Kevin Locke, Native American dancer, presents "Hoop of Life," 8 p.m. in West Gym. Admission is free.

April 15 • Latin Fiesta, a Philadelphia-based award-winning ensemble whose music includes Latin styles, 8 p.m. in Swope Music Hall. Cost is $3 for general admission.

April 16• Taiko Drummers, dynamic drumming and movement, 8 p.m. in Swope Music Hall. Cost is $3 general admission.• The Art Department will open its art exhibit on Main Street from 6 to 8 p.m. Admission is free.

April 17 • Children's Day, with activities, shows, arts, crafts and music featuring the group The Pop Rocks, 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Morrow Way Lawn. Rain location is the West Gym. Admission is free.

April 19• English department-sponsored poets, Ekiwah Adler-Belendez from Mexico and Valzhyna Mort from Belarus, 7:30 p.m. in Eisenberg Hall. Admission is free.• Slippery Rock University Brass Ensemble, 7:30 p.m. in Swope Music Building. Cost is $3 for general admission; free for SRU students with ID.

April 20• Flute choir, 7:30 p.m. in Swope Music Hall. Cost is $3 for general admission; free for SRU students.• Brave New Plays, 8 p.m. April 20 to 25, except for April 25 when the show is at 2 p.m., all in Miller Auditorium, featuring the best of SRU student plays and performances.

April 21• Nego Gato, Afro-Brazilian music and dance ensemble, 8 p.m. in Swope Music Hall. Cost is $3 for general admission.• Brave New Plays, 8 p.m., Miller Auditorium.

April 22• Wacongo Dance Company, a traditional ensemble of master drummers, musicians and dancers from the Democratic Republic of Congo, who perform the ancestral songs and dances of Central Africa, 8 p.m. in Swope Music Hall. Cost is $3 for general admission.• Brave New Plays, 8 p.m., Miller Auditorium.

April 23• Senior Synthesis Tech Rehearsal, after classes in Swope Music Hall. Admission is free.• Brave New Plays, 8 p.m., Miller Auditorium.

April 24• Senior Synthesis Dance Concerts, 5 and 8 p.m. in Swope Music Hall. Cost is $5 for general admission and $3 for SRU students.• Brave New Plays, 8 p.m., Miller Auditorium.
