County's 89 precincts vote GOP

Trump fares worst in Slippery Rock

While not as impressive as his national showing, Republican president-elect Donald Trump ran the table in Butler County, winning all 89 precincts in Tuesday’s election.

The county, after all, leans solidly Republican.

Almost as noteworthy as sweeping every precinct, was the margin by which the real-estate-mogul-turned-politician carried the county.

He received 61,388 votes to Democratic candidate Hillary Clinton’s 26,834 votes, according to unofficial election results. In percentage terms, he beat her 66 percent to a shade under 29 percent.

The remaining ballots cast in the county went to the three third-party candidates.

In the county, Trump garnered 1,627 more votes than Mitt Romney in 2012 and 4,314 more votes than John McCain in 2008. Romney and McCain are the most recent former GOP presidential nominees.

Romney won 66.6 percent of the ballots cast while McCain won 62.9 percent.

Trump’s tally of 66 percent showed he won a lot more than just Republican votes, since the county’s GOP registration is 53.6 percent.

More evidence of his strength in Butler County was that he received at least 70 percent of the vote in 33 different precincts.

The Petrolia Valley was especially kind to Trump. In Parker Township, for example, he had his best showing, winning 84.3 percent of ballots cast.

The next best pro-Trump precincts were in Bruin and Karns City with the Republican garnering 82.4 and 81.7 percent, respectively.

Not unexpectedly, Trump fared worst in the Slippery Rock precinct, where Slippery Rock University students comprise a relatively large portion of the precinct’s electorate.

College students have historically supported, often in overwhelming numbers, the Democratic presidential candidate.

Trump defeated Clinton in the borough, 46.3 to 44.5 percent. It was the only precinct that he didn’t win a majority of ballots cast.

His next worst showing was in the Butler City 4-1 precinct, where he captured 50.8 percent of the vote.

Turnout, meanwhile, in Butler County came in at a strong 72 percent.

Still, it wasn’t as strong as the past two presidential elections.

The 2012 turnout was 73½ percent. In 2008, it was even better at 75 percent.

Among the precincts, the borough of Connoquenessing topped Tuesday’s turnout with 80.8 percent, followed by Butler Township 4 at 80 percent and Portersville at 79.9 percent.

At the other end of the spectrum, Butler City 3 had a turnout of just 52.1 percent. Not much better was Slippery Rock Township at 53.6 and Slippery Rock borough at 53.9 percent.
