Man faces judge in window-jumping incident
Johvian R. Everett, 25, of Pittsburgh, came before District Judge William T. Fullerton for his preliminary hearing on Monday, Nov. 18, on charges relating to an incident from October 2021 in which he is accused of threatening another man with a firearm until the man jumped out of a second-story window and suffered life-altering injuries.
Everett is charged with aggravated assault, possession of firearm when prohibited, carrying a firearm without a license, reckless endangerment, two counts of terroristic threats, and three counts of simple assault.
The alleged incident happened at an apartment within a house on West Jefferson Street in Butler.
A woman who witnessed the events of that day was called to the stand during the Monday hearing and testified she was at the house on Jefferson Street on Oct. 18, 2021, with Jeffrey Kyles-Edge.
The woman testified that during the incident, Everett — who the woman identified as “Jay” — entered the apartment along with his brother and demanded money from Kyles-Edge. She testified that Everett repeatedly screamed, “Where’s my (expletive) money?” while Kyles-Edge repeatedly replied, “I got your money.”
At one point, according to the woman, Everett pulled out a black handgun and pointed it at Kyles-Edge, continuing to demand “his money.”
The woman testified that Kyles-Edge escaped from Everett and made his way into the bathroom of the apartment, where he jumped from a second-story window. While she said she didn’t see him jump, she did hear Everett acknowledge that he had.
The woman went on to say that Everett forced her into a bathtub, pointed the gun at her, demanded “the money” and took her phone.
According to a police officer who testified during the hearing, Kyles-Edge was flown to Allegheny General Hospital, where he was placed into a medically induced coma. He suffered swelling of the brain and a collapsed lung as a result of the fall, and he is presently in an assisted-living facility.
The officer added that Everett was not legally allowed to possess a firearm at the time, as he already had a felony conviction — robbery — on his record, dating to January 2019.
Although the alleged incident happened in October 2021, it wasn’t until June 2023 that charges were filed against Everett, and it wasn’t until Oct. 31 of this year that he was arrested.
A formal arraignment is scheduled for Jan. 7 In Butler County Common Pleas Court.
