4-H'ers vie at horse show

13 from county part of event

Butler County 4-H Horse Club members earned 10 awards at the 46th annual Pennsylvania State 4-H Horse Show, held Oct. 28 through 30 at the Farm Show Complex in Harrisburg.

More than 900 youth from 60 counties vied for awards in 46 performance and 63 production classes. Butler County had 13 4-H'ers entered in the competition. Events tested skills in showmanship, equitation, pleasure, jumping, driving and timed events.

In the performance division, Justin Vose of Butler captured second place in Raised Box Keyhole Horses. Justin also placed sixth in Cloverleaf Barrel Race Horses and 10th in Western Riding.

Kelsey Lackey of Chicora captured seventh place in Raised Box Keyhole Ponies. In the Miniature Horse Driving class, Amanda Dillaman of Slippery Rock placed seventh.

In the 4-H horse production division, members exhibit project animals that have been raised by the member. Charmaine Wulff of North Washington captured first place in the Appaloosa Yearling Gelding class.

Madalyn Boy of Boyers earned second place with her entry in Half Arabian Filly of this Year. Amanda Dillaman received third-place honors in Hunter Type Horse Colt or Gelding of this Year.

Additional placings in the production division were earned by Amanda Mabold of West Sunbury with a third in Stock Type Pony Filly of this Year and Ginger Ullrich of Slippery Rock with a fifth in Quarter Horse 2-Year-Old Fillies.

Also competing at the horse show were Kyle Carson of Connoquenessing, Heather Corbett of Butler, Joshua Dillaman of Slippery Rock, John Rihel of Slippery Rock, Dannielle Spencer of Cabot and Erin Turner of Renfrew.

The purpose of the Pennsylvania 4-H horse program is to develop life skills in youth and skills in horse management. Through competition, 4-H'ers develop riding skills, gain self-confidence and learn proper care of animals.

The horse show culminates the year for approximately 7,500 Pennsylvania 4-H members enrolled in horse and pony clubs. To be eligible for this show, 4-H'ers had to advance through qualifying competitions at county and district levels.
