50 turkeys distributed in Slippery Rock

SLIPPERY ROCK — Fifty families will have a turkey for their Thanksgiving feast thanks to a giveaway Monday, Nov. 25 in the Slippery Rock gazebo on Main Street.

The event was intended for families in need and hosted by SA Recycling in collaboration with the borough. Together, they collected nonperishable Thanksgiving items such as stuffing and canned goods to go along with the turkeys.

According to borough Mayor Jondavid Longo, the event is “parallel” to other initiatives put on by Slippery Rock’s local food pantry, Feed My Sheep Cupboard.

“This is something specifically that SA Recycling wanted to do for our community, and this is different (because) income verification isn't needed,” Longo said at the Nov. 19 borough council meeting. “This is just very much a kindness that’s being offered.”

The turkeys and fixings were handed out on a first-come, first-served basis.
