Fire chief: Quick response keeps fire from causing further damage at Clay Township home

Butler County Volunteer Fire Departments responded to a structure fire at 421 Euclid Road in Clay Township on Wednesday, Nov. 27.

A quick response by multiple Butler County fire departments prevented further damage in a fire at a Clay Township home Wednesday, Nov. 27, according to West Sunbury Fire Chief Gage Ariss.

After an initial call came in at 1:59 p.m., Arris said the crews rapidly responded in a way that prevented extensive damage to the home at 421 Euclid Road.

“The fire started just before 2 p.m., and I would say we had it under control in a half hour,” he said.

Ariss noted that the homeowner was inside of the residence when the fire broke out, but he evacuated without any injuries. There was no one else inside the home at the time.

Crews believe a wood stove was the cause of the blaze, and only one back room was a total loss thanks to the efforts of the responding departments.

“It was started by a wood stove, with the chimney pipe going up through the roof,” Ariss said. “That’s where it caught at was the roof and burned into the wall. Only one back room...was a total loss.”

Volunteer fire departments from Unionville, Prospect, West Sunbury, Slippery Rock and the Butler Ambulance were initially dispatched to the scene.

Ariss stated that before his department arrived, Unionville and Slippery Rock Departments were first on the scene and were “already pumping to the fire.”

Butler County Dispatch then requested more units, including departments from North Washington, Marion Township, Harrisville and Oneida Valley, to help deal with the situation.
