NEW YORK — Notre Dame dropped out of The Associated Press college football poll after losing its second game of the season, and Arizona State moved.

Alabama remained No. 1 as the top five held their spots for the third consecutive week. The Crimson Tide received 55 of 60 first-place votes, and No. 2 Oregon got the rest from the media panel, one more than last week. Clemson is third, followed by Ohio State and Stanford.

Georgia moved up to No. 6 after its 44-41 victory against LSU, which slipped four spots to 10th.

Notre Dame (3-2), coming off a loss in the BCS championship game, began the season No. 14.

ARLINGTON, Texas — The Texas Rangers forced a one-game tiebreaker for the second AL wild-card spot, winning their seventh in a row when Geovany Soto hit a tiebreaking RBI double and later homered to beat the Los Angeles Angels 6-2.The Rangers (91-71) added game No. 163 to the regular season, and will host Tampa Bay on Monday night. The winner plays two days later at wild card leader Cleveland in another win-or-be-done matchup.

MIAMI — Detroit Tigers slugger Miguel Cabrera fell short in his bid to become the first player to win the Triple Crown in successive seasons, but clinched his third batting title in a row, sitting out the regular-season finale at Miami to finish with an average of .348.Rockies right fielder Michael Cuddyer won the NL title with a .331 average.

MIAMI — Erik Spoelstra signed a multiyear extension to remain as coach of the Miami Heat.Spoelstra has led the Heat to the past two NBA championships and is 260-134 in his first five seasons in Miami. He had one year left on his existing contract, a deal that the sides agreed to in 2011.

PONTE VEDRA BEACH, Fla. — Chesson Hadley had to settle for a victory in the Web.com Tour Championship.Hadley closed with a 1-under 69 for a two-shot victory in the fourth and final event of the series that determine PGA Tour cards. But a late bogey by Scott Gardiner kept Hadley from winning the special money list and getting full status on the PGA Tour.
