ADAMS TWP — Mars High School's 1,600-meter runner Scott Slaney broke the school record in that event during the Mars Invitational Friday night.

Slaney placed seventh in the event, but ran it in four minutes, 25.9 seconds. That broke the previous Mars record of 4:28, set by Wayne Santom in the 1988 Mars Invitational.

In an emotional saga that has dragged on for nearly three years, the Sacramento Kings finally appear to be staying put in California's capital city.The NBA's relocation committee voted unanimously to recommend that owners reject the application for the Kings to relocate to Seattle, the latest — and by far the strongest — in a long line of cities that almost landed the franchise. The committee made the decision over a conference call and forwarded the recommendation to the NBA Board of Governors.The board, which consists of all 30 owners, will convene the week of May 13 to vote. The recommendation doesn't guarantee the Kings will stay put, but it's likely they will.

TORONTO — The Colorado Avalanche won the NHL draft lottery after finishing the regular season with the worst record in the Western Conference.Colorado, which went 16-25-7 during the lockout-shortened season, had an 18.8 percent chance of winning the lottery. Picking second in the June draft will be the Florida Panthers, who finished last in the NHL at 15-27-6 and had the best odds of winning the lottery at 25 percent.The Tampa Bay Lightning will pick third.All 14 non-playoff teams had a shot at winning the first overall pick, with the remaining 13 squads selecting in reverse order of their regular-season point total.
