NEW YORK — Second-round pick turned Hall of Famer Dermontti Dawson looks to bring some good karma to the Pittsburgh Steelers when he announces their selection Friday at the NFL draft.

For the second straight year, the league will have retired players announce the choices by their former teams in the second round.

NEW ORLEANS — The New Orleans Saints denied an anonymously sourced ESPN report on Monday which alleges that general manager Mickey Loomis' booth in the Superdome was wired so he could listen to opposing coaches' radio communications during games.ESPN could not determine if the system was ever used. The report on Monday's “Outside the Lines” said Loomis would have been able to eavesdrop on opponents from 2002 to 2004. The report also said the system was disabled in 2005, when the Superdome was heavily damaged by Hurricane Katrina.Saints spokesman Greg Bensel called the report “1,000 percent false.”

ARLINGTON, Texas — Ivan Rodriguez made one last throw from behind home plate to second base at Rangers Ballpark.The 14-time All-Star catcher announced his retirement Monday, ending a 21-season playing career spent mostly in Texas. The Rangers then honored him with a pregame ceremony that ended with a unique first pitch.

ENGLEWOOD, Colo. — Veteran safety Brian Dawkins is retiring from the NFL after 16 seasons.Dawkins posted the news on his Twitter account Monday, thanking the teams he played for, his coaches and teammates and fans. Dawkins spent his first 13 seasons with the Philadelphia Eagles and his last three with the Denver Broncos.

LOUIS — St. Louis Blues goaltender Jaroslav Halak will not play in the first two games of the upcoming second-round playoff series against the Los Angeles Kings due to a lower-body injury sustained in the first-round series against San Jose.Blues coach Ken Hitchcock disclosed his decision Monday.
