MIAMI — Quarterback David Garrard signed a one-year contract Monday with the Miami Dolphins and said he was told he’ll be given a shot at the starting job.

He’s not sure yet who else will be part of the competition, though.

For now, Garrard and incumbent Matt Moore are the contenders for the job.

Patriots agree to deal with Stallworth

FOXBOROUGH, Mass. — The New England Patriots are stocking up on wide receivers who have experience in their complex offensive system.

A person with knowledge of the negotiations said Monday that wide receiver Donte’ Stallworth has agreed to a one-year contract to return to the Patriots.

The Patriots also reportedly reached agreement last week with Brandon Lloyd, who played for current Patriots offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels when he was head coach of the Denver Broncos in 2009 and the first 12 games in 2010. The Patriots have not officially announced signing Lloyd.

Browns kicker signs franchise tag

CLEVELAND — Kicker Phil Dawson signed his one-year tender Monday as the Cleveland Browns’ franchise player.

Tagged for the second straight year by the Browns, the dependable Dawson will return for a 14th season in Cleveland, the only steady facet of the franchise since its expansion rebirth. Dawson will make $3.8 million next season, a raise from the $3.175 million he made last season, arguably the finest of the 37-year-old’s NFL career.

Dawson converted on 24 of 29 field-goal attempts, making seven kicks beyond 50 yards — one shy of the league record.

Nuggets’ Gallinari breaks left thumb

DENVER — Denver Nuggets forward Danilo Gallinari left Monday’s game against Dallas with a broken left thumb.

Gallinari was injured in the third quarter and X-rays revealed the fracture. He did not return to the game.

Gallinari missed 13 games with a severely sprained ankle suffered against Houston on Feb. 6. Gallinari leads the Nuggets in scoring at 15.6 points a game and is averaging 4.6 rebounds.

Red Wings’ Helm out 4-6 weeks

DETROIT — The injury-riddled Detroit Red Wings learned on Monday that center Darren Helm will be out four to six weeks with a sprained MCL.Detroit is already without captain and defenseman Nicklas Lidstrom (deep bone bruise in his right ankle), defenseman Jonathan Ericsson (broken left wrist), defenseman Jakub Kindl (strained oblique), right wing Johan Franzen (back spasms) and goalie Joey MacDonald (back).Kings waive forward HicksonSACRAMENTO, Calif. — The Sacramento Kings have waived forward J.J.
