PITTSBURGH — Longtime La Roche College men's basketball coach Scott Lang died Friday night after collapsing during practice.Lang, 40, a Mars native, received assistance from the athletic trainer and paramedics before being transported to UPMC Passavant Hospital, where he later died.He became the youngest NCAA head men's basketball coach in the 1997 when he was hired by La Roche.Lang was in his 14th season and holds the school record of 150 wins.
PITTSBURGH — Left-hander Scott Olsen has agreed to a $550,000, one-year contract with the Pirates that includes a club option for 2012.Olsen gets a $450,000 salary next season. The deal includes a $4 million option for 2012 with a $100,000 buyout. Olsen also can earn $3 million in performance bonuses based on starts next season and, if the option is picked up, $1 million more in bonuses in 2012.Olsen, who turns 27 in January, was 4-8 with a 5.56 ERA in 17 games, 15 starts, for Washington last season. He has a career record of 37-49 with a 4.85 ERA over six years in the majors.
NAIROBI, Kenya — Martina Navratilova was hospitalized in Kenya Friday because of fluid accumulation in her lungs after attempting to climb Mount Kilimanjaro. The 54-year-old tennis great is expected to recover.Navratilova was diagnosed with high-altitude pulmonary edema, Dr. David Silverstein, a consultant in cardiology and internal medicine at Nairobi Hospital, said.She is expected to spend two to three days in the hospital, Silverstein said.Navratilova was assisted down Africa's highest peak by porters and driven to Kilimanjaro Christian Medical Centre.
