BUTLER TWP — The Butler County Community College men's and women's basketball teams dropped their season openers last weekend.

The Pioneers women lost a 63-55 decision to Southern Maryland, despite getting 17 points from Katresa Savisky and 14 from Rachel Doutt. BC3 led 48-45 with seven minutes remaining when Ashley Campbell fouled out.

The Pioneers men dropped a 79-61 decision to Mercyhurst-North East, despite 15 points from Blake Anderson. Stephen Corter and Jordan Taylor added 11 each. BC3 sank just nine of 21 free throws.

SLIPPERY ROCK — Four Slippery Rock University men's soccer players and one woman were named to the all-region team by Daktronics.Tom Pool and Patrick Conley made the first team as defenders while goalkeeper Greg Blum and midfielder Toby Bowser made the second team.Rock women's team captain and senior midfielder Allison Hindley made the second team. She finished her career ranked fourth on SRU's career scoring list with 78 points.

SLIPPERY ROCK — The Slippery Rock University field hockey team raised $600 during October as part of the Play for the Cure initiative honoring breast cancer awareness month.All of the proceeds will be donated to the Susan G. Komen Foundation.

Mars seniors Alex Perri (midfielder), and Josh Brake and Yulian Lutsiv (forwards). and Knoch junior Kory Wood (midfielder) were selected for the All-WPIAL Class AA team.

ANAHEIM, Calif. — Ed “Spanky” Kirkpatrick, who played seven seasons for the Angels during a 16-year major league career, has died. He was 66.The team says he died Monday. No immediate cause of death was available.Kirkpatrick was signed at 17 out of Glendora (Calif.) High and played for the Angels from 1962-68, mostly as a right fielder and pinch hitter. After the ‘68 season, he was traded to Kansas City. He later played with Pittsburgh, Texas and Milwaukee before retiring in 1978.
