ALBANY, N.Y. — New York Gov. David Paterson said a proposed state bailout will pass and New York thoroughbred racing at Belmont and Saratoga race tracks will go on as scheduled.Paterson said Tuesday he expects the legislature to approve a $17 million loan to keep the New York Racing Association afloat. Its cash flow is hurt by delays in getting video lottery terminals built and operating at Aqueduct racetrack.NYRA officials say the agency is running out of money and may have to shut down in less than three weeks, the day after the Belmont Stakes.
SECAUCUS, N.J. — With a lucky charm from the franchise's best days, the Washington Wizards won the NBA's draft lottery.Washington moved up from the No. 5 spot Tuesday to earn the top pick in next month's draft, when it will likely choose between Kentucky freshman John Wall and national player of the year Evan Turner of Ohio State. The Philadelphia 76ers, another disappointment this season, moved up from the sixth spot to grab the No. 2 pick. The New Jersey Nets continued the run of failure by teams with the best chance of winning, falling to the third.
A federal judge dismissed Jeremy Mayfield's lawsuit against NASCAR Tuesday, a ruling that presumably ends the yearlong saga surrounding the first Sprint Cup driver suspended for failing a random drug test.U.S. District Judge Graham Mullen ruled in Charlotte, N.C., that Mayfield had twice waived his rights to pursue any claims against NASCAR when he signed documents both as a driver and as an owner to participate in the stock car series.
WASHINGTON — Former NBA center Manute Bol is hospitalized with severe kidney trouble and a painful skin condition after falling critically ill while returning home from helping fight election corruption in his native Sudan."I believe he is going to survive this, but he's had a total kidney failure," said Tom Prichard, director of Sudan Sunrise, a group that promotes reconciliation in Sudan. "If he'd stayed two more days in Sudan, I don't think he'd be alive right now."Prichard says the 7-foot-6 Bol was returning to the United States last week and was hospitalized during a stopover at Dulles International Airport. He said Bol has undergone three dialysis treatments and has developed Stevens-Johnson Syndrome, a condition that has caused him to lose patches of skin. The skin around Bol's mouth was so sore that he went 11 days without eating and could barely talk. Bol, 47, is on morphine and will probably be moved to a burn unit, according to Prichard.
