PITTSBURGH — Penguins captain Sidney Crosby will carry the Olympic torch in his native Nova Scotia next month as the flame makes its way across Canada before the 2010 Winter Olympic Games in Vancouver.
Crosby says in a statement Tuesday that he's "honored and thrilled to have the opportunity to carry the Olympic flame in my home province of Nova Scotia."
The 22-year-old from Cole Harbor, Nova Scotia, will represent Canada in the Olympic hockey tournament. He'll carry the torch Nov. 18 in Halifax.
KARNS CITY — Karns City High will host a soccer doubleheader Thursday.The Gremlins girls take on Forest Area at 5:30 p.m. while the Karns City boys battle DuBois Central Catholic at 7:30.Admission is $5 for adults and $2 for students.
PITTSBURGH — The Pittsburgh Steelers' off week has turned into a week off.After meeting with his players on Tuesday, coach Mike Tomlin gave most of them the rest of the week off. Only the rookies will report today, and then only briefly. All players will return Monday.Since the NFL began inserting bye weeks into the schedule in 1990, this is the first time Pittsburgh has taken an entire week off from practice during the season. The Steelers (5-2) don't play again until Nov. 9, a Monday night game in Denver.
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. — Bob Knight's attorney has notified Indiana University that the former coach will not accept the school's $75,000 offer to settle a lawsuit.School spokesman Larry MacIntyre confirmed Tuesday the check was sent to Knight's attorney last week, and the school has received notification the money, donated by alums, will be returned.Knight sued Indiana, claiming the school did not properly defend him against a suit from Ron Felling, a former assistant coach. Knight settled that case in 2002 by paying Felling $25,000 and admitting that in 1999 he shoved Felling in anger after overhearing him criticize Knight's coaching and behavior.Indiana fired Knight in 2000. He is to be inducted into Indiana's Hall of Fame next week.
CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Joe Gibbs Racing will replace Kyle Busch's crew chief after this weekend's race at Talladega Superspeedway.Steve Addington is out after 12 victories in 68 races running Busch's team.He'll be replaced by Dave Rogers, a crew chief for JGR in the Nationwide Series.Addington leaves after a disappointing season for Busch. He won four races but missed a spot in the Chase for the Sprint Cup championship by just eight points.
