LOCK HAVEN — Knoch graduate Amanda Sharbaugh, who scored two goals and recorded an assist to help the Gannon University soccer to two wins last week, was named Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference West Player of the Week.
The sophomore, who was the PSAC West Freshman of the Year last season, broke a 1-1 tie with a goal in the 62nd minute to topple Slippery Rock University.
Sharbaugh leads Gannon in both goals and points through seven games and already ranks fourth in school history in career goals and seventh in career points.
PITTSBURGH — The under-construction Consol Energy Center in Pittsburgh will be the site for first- and second-round NCAA men's basketball tournament games on March 15 and 17, 2012.The Pittsburgh Penguins' new arena is scheduled to open for the 2010-11 NHL season.Duquesne University will be the host school in 2012, as it was when NCAA men's tournament games were played before sellout crowds at Mellon Arena, formerly the Civic Arena, in 1997 and 2002. The NCAA East women's regional was played at Mellon Arena in 2001.In 1997, 15th-seeded Coppin The 2012 Final Four will be played in New Orleans. Other early round sites are Albuquerque, N.M.; Louisville, Ky., Portland, Ore.; Columbus, Ohio; Greensboro, N.C.; Nashville, Tenn.; and Omaha, Neb. Regional sites are Boston, Phoenix, Atlanta and St. Louis.As the host school, Duquesne cannot play in Pittsburgh even if it makes the NCAA field. Pitt or Robert Morris would be eligible only if that team played three games or fewer at Consol Energy Center that season.
HOUSTON — The Houston Astros fired manager Cecil Cooper Monday.The Astros are 70-79 and have lost seven straight games. Third-base coach Dave Clark will take over as interim manager for the final 13 games this season.The 59-year-old Cooper was hired on Aug. 27, 2007, to replace Phil Garner.
