The Eagle County Baseball League will have 11 teams for the 2009 season. The league will play a 30-game schedule beginning May 20.Teams include Butler City, Cranberry, Evans City, Freeport, Harmony, Mars I, Mars II, Natrona Heights, Saxonburg, Wexford and Zelienople.Longtime Saxonburg manager Dan Cunningham retired from that position and will be president of the league. Bill Clinefelter is vice president and Wayne Greiser is the secretary-treasurer.
NATRONA HEIGHTS— Seven Butler County high school basketball players will participate in the 13th annual A-KCager Classic March 20 and 21 at Highlands High School.Playing for the girls West squad will be Kehle Pelles of Mars, Cortney Chelecki of Freeport and Laura Gray of Knoch.Playing for the boys West squad are Vinny Smith of Mars, Sean Carnahan and Harrison Wood of Freeport, and Michael Gallagher of Knoch. Knoch coach Chris Andreassi and his staff will coach the boys West squad.Skills competitions are at 7 p.m. March 20. The girls all-star game is at 6 p.m. March 21 and the boys game is at 8. Tickets will be available at the door for $5.
FOX CHAPEL — Grant Foley, a resident of Meridian connected on a team-high 27 3-pointers as a sophomore to key the Shady Side Academy junior varsity boys basketball team.
SLIPPERY ROCK — Slippery Rock University's Denell Stephens was named PSAC West Men's Basketball Player of the Year, Kevin Reynolds was tapped Coach of the Year and guard Kyle Camper was named to the second team of the league's all-star squad.Stephens averaged 20 points and 9.6 rebounds per game, placing him fourth and second, respectively, in the PSAC. The senior shot 57.5 percent from the floor and was the conference's top offensive rebounder. He is SRU's first player of the year since Myron Brown in 1991.Reynolds, in his first season with The Rock, guided the team to its first 20-win season since 1991 and its first winning season since 1999-2000, a runner-up finish in the PSAC West, the semifinals of the PSAC tournament and just missed a regional berth in the NCAA tournament.Camper, a senior, set a new PSAC record for single-season assists with 300
