RICHMOND, Va. — Imprisoned NFL star Michael Vick will be allowed to serve the last two months of his sentence under home confinement because there is no room at a halfway house for him, a government official told The Associated Press.

Vick is serving a 23-month sentence at the federal penitentiary in Leavenworth, Kan., after pleading guilty to bankrolling a dogfighting operation at a home he owned in eastern Virginia's Surry County. He also admitted to participating in the killing of several underperforming dogs.

CHICAGO — Johnny "Red" Kerr, the former Chicago Bulls coach who spent more than three decades as a broadcaster for the team, died. He was 76.Kerr died at his home after a battle with prostate cancer.

PHOENIX — Doug Mientkiewicz and the Los Angeles Dodgers agreed to a minor league contract Thursday.The 34-year-old Mientkiewicz, who has played for six major league teams during his 11-year career, won a Gold Glove as Minnesota's first baseman in 2001. His .996 career fielding percentage in 955 games is tops among active first basemen.The left-handed hitting Mientkiewicz batted .277 with two homers and 30 RBIs in 125 games as a utility man with Pittsburgh last season, including a .326 mark (14-for-43) as a pinch-hitter. His overall career average is .271.

CHICAGO — Norm Van Lier, one of the most popular players in Chicago Bulls history and one of the NBA's top defensive players in the 1970s, has died. He was 61.Van Lier, who played at Midland High School and St. Francis (Pa.) College, was found dead in his home just blocks away from the Bulls arena on Thursday. Cause of death was not immediately known.
