PITTSBURGH — Gov. Ed Rendell has joined team owner and Hall of Famer Mario Lemieux at "center ice" to break ground on the Pittsburgh Penguins new $290 million arena.Rendell and Lemieux and other dignitaries were actually standing on dirt. But Thursday's groundbreaking occurred about where center ice will be located in the new building.Rendell says the arena will keep the Penguins in the city at least 30 years after it opens. That's scheduled for the 2010-11 season.
CHESTER, W.Va. — Butler heavyweight Jim Emrick will fight on the undercard of the Verquan Kimbrough-Michael Clark NABA lightweight title bout Sept. 25 at The Harv.Emrick (6-1-1) will take on Dan Whetsel (9-13-1) of Toledo, Ohio, in an eight-round rematch of their six-round draw last February.Aliquippa's Kimbrough (20-1-1) is defending his title against Clark (37-5) of Columbus, Ohio, in a 10-round bout.Doors open at 6 p.m. for the 7 p.m. show. Tickets are $100, $50 and $20 and are available through Ticketmaster.
CLEVELAND — Cleveland Indians' pitcher and Seneca Valley graduate Zach Jackson allowed three runs on eight hits over five innings in the Indians' 11-5 loss to the Baltimore Orioles Thursday.Jackson left the game after five innings with the Orioles holding a 3-2 lead before Cleveland tied the game in the sixth inning.Jackson settled down after a rocky start, surrendering a pair of first-inning runs on four hits, but Cleveland quickly tied it up with two runs in its first at-bat.Jackson threw 97 pitches, 59 for strikes. He struck out one and walked one.
