Steve Roach, an interim assistant to the athletic director at Slippery Rock University for the past six months, has had the interim removed from his title. Roach was one of four finalists for the non-faculty position.
Also, former SRU decathlete and Grove City High graduate Bill Jordan has been hired as an assistant track and field coach.
He will assist the decathletes and heptathletes for The Rock under head coach John Papa and will help assistant coach Mark Hannay with the high jumpers.
Duke was still No. 1 in The Associated Press' college basketball poll, as it has been all season. This week, however, the Blue Devils weren't a unanimous choice.One of three unbeaten teams in Division I, Duke (16-0) received all but one first-place vote from the 72-member national media panel. The other went to No. 2 Florida (16-0) after a week in which 11 ranked teams lost, two of them twice.Arizona and Cincinnati, the two ranked teams to lose two games last week, dropped out of the Top 25. They were replaced by Syracuse and Iowa, two schools which were ranked earlier in the season.George Washington joined the women's poll at No. 25 as one of two newcomers, putting both the school's teams in the Top 25.BYU was the other newcomer in the poll, which had Tennessee leading a top four that was unchanged.Duke (16-0) had nine first-place votes and LSU (14-0) received the two others. CHAPEL HILL, N.C. — Students from Atlantic Coast Conference rivals Duke and North Carolina completed their 21/2-day basketball game, finishing with an expected world record for the longest continuous game.Duke won 3,688-3,444. The game began at 8 a.m. Saturday and ended at 6 p.m., marking 58 straight hours in Fetzer Gymnasium on the loser's Chapel Hill campus.
KIRKLAND, Wash. — Shaun Alexander said he expects to play in Sunday's NFC championship game against the Carolina Panthers after Seattle's playoff win over Washington with a concussion.The league rushing champion and MVP said he has not had any lingering symptoms from the blow to the side of his helmet he took from two Redskins early in Saturday's game.Also, Seahawks starting right tackle Sean Locklear was being held without bail in the King County Jail for investigation of domestic violence assault, police and the team said.Locklear was booked early Sunday.
MIAMI — Dontrelle Willis avoided salary arbitration, agreeing to a $4.35 million, one-year contract with the Florida Marlins.Willis went 22-10 with a 2.63 ERA last season and finished second to St. Louis' Chris Carpenter in NL Cy Young Award balloting.
