Lou Tepper, who guided Edinboro University to three consecutive PSAC West co-championships, has been named head football coach at Indiana (Pa.) University.

Tepper, 60, succeeds Frank Cignetti, who retired in November after 20 years as IUP's head coach.

Tepper was 40-26 in six years at Edinboro, including 26-7 over the past three seasons. His Edinboro teams defeated IUP each of the past three seasons and the Fighting Scots led all of Division II in scoring defense, rushing defense and total defense in 2005.

Tepper also served as head coach at the University of Illinois from 1991-96 and has been a defensive coordinator for a total of 19 seasons at five schools.

PITTSBURGH — Right-hander Ryan Vogelsong agreed Tuesday to a $555,000, one-year contract with the Pittsburgh Pirates.Vogelsong was 2-2 with a 4.43 ERA in 44 games last season, pitching mostly in mop-up roles. He was demoted from the starting rotation after going 6-13 with a 6.50 ERA in 31 games in 2004, including 26 starts.Vogelsong made $332,000 last season. He can make as much as $125,000 in bonuses next season as a starter: $25,000 for 10 starts, $30,000 for 15, $30,000 for 20 and $40,000 for 25. He also could earn $75,000 extra as a reliever with $25,000 bonuses each for 45, 55, and 65 games pitched.Vogelsong was eligible for salary arbitration. The Pirates have three remaining unsigned players who are arbitration-eligible: left-hander Oliver Perez, right-hander Kip Wells and outfielder-first baseman Craig Wilson.
