An upcoming production at Hobnob Theatre Company aims to transport the audience to a time and place using only actors’ vocal performances.

“The Seafarer” is an Old English poem that was adapted into a play in 2006 by playwright Conor McPherson. In the play, Sharky Harkin has returned home to North Dublin, Ireland, at Christmastime to take care of his brother, Richard.

Richard is a freewheeling soul and an overbearing alcoholic who has recently gone blind. He lives to drink, and he urges Sharky to drink as well, even though Sharky has promised himself he would remain sober for the holidays.

The brothers and two of their friends gather on Christmas Eve for a game of poker, and one of the friends brings Mr. Lockhart, an elegantly dressed newcomer. Mr. Lockhart, it turns out, is the Devil himself, come to bargain for Sharky's soul.

The Hobnob production of “The Seafarer” shows one night only, at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 7, at the studio space at 134 S. Main St. in Butler.

Tickets for this performance are $10 for general admission and $5 for students and senior citizens. For ticket reservations, visit hobnobtheatre.com.

The show contains adult language and situations.
