College roundup: Knoch’s Kennedy Christy helps Juniata College volleyball 3-peat as NCAA champs
Knoch grad Kennedy Christy recorded a double-double to lead Juniata College to a dramatic three-peat in the NCAA Division III Women’s Volleyball National Championship.
The Eagles beat Wisconsin-Whitewater 3-2 Saturday at the Cregger Center in Salem, Va., but not without some theatrics. The Eagles stormed out to a 2-0 set lead with identical 25-19 wins, but the Warhawks stormed back to tie it up with a 25-15 third-set win and 28-26 fourth-set win.
Juniata responded. Lilly Podolan recorded four kills during an 8-0 run to start the fifth set, and Christy added a kill to make it 11-5 on the way to a 15-10 set victory and the national championship for the third straight year.
Christy, a graduate outside hitter, also had two aces and a block.
Bloomsburg beat Slippery Rock 64-48 in PSAC action Saturday.
Regan Atkins and Mairan Haggerty had 15 points for The Rock (4-5, 2-2), with the total a career-high for Haggerty.
Pitt’s postseason run ended with a 2-0 loss to Vermont in the NCAA tournament quarterfinals Saturday, despite a 17-6 shot advantage.
Mars grad Peyton Randall, a freshman at Grove City College, won the 100-yard breaststroke in 1:13.79, the 200 breast in 2:47 and the 1,650 free in 20:15.35 in a 88-59 ual-meet win against Bethany.
