'Munchie' run leads to arrests
An apparent case of the "munchies" was the undoing for a pair of drug suspects, authorities said.
Butler police Wednesday arrested Devin M. Lutz, 24, of Harmony and Preston R. Bartmas, 25, of Summit Township at Friedman's market on West Brady Street and found them with suspected marijuana and prescription drugs.
Employees called authorities around 1:05 p.m. after they spotted the suspects "going through the store eating cookies and drinking chocolate milk," according to a police report.
Officers said they found empty food containers the pair had put back on store shelves without paying for the items.
Lutz was searched and found with suspected marijuana and a foil marijuana pipe, police said.
Bartmas, the police report said, was carrying diazepam and Klonopin pills, which were packaged for sale.
Diazepam is the generic name for anti-anxiety drug Valium. Klonopin is used to treat seizures and panic disorder.
Police suspect Lutz had given Bartmas the diazepam pills they found him with, the report said.
District Judge Kevin O'Donnell arraigned the defendants on felony drug charges — Lutz for delivery of a controlled substance and Bartmas for possession with intent to deliver a controlled substance.
Both suspects also are charged with retail theft, conspiracy and possession of drug paraphernalia.
Additionally, Lutz is charged with possession of a small amount of marijuana and Bartmas is charged with possession of a controlled substance.
The defendants following arraignment were placed in the Butler County Prison on $10,000 bond each.
A preliminary hearing for Lutz is set March 2 before District Judge Pete Shaffer. Bartmas is scheduled for his hearing March 30.
Lutz was sentenced in Butler County Court last week to one year on probation for his guilty plea to possession of drug paraphernalia in Cranberry Township in 2008, court records showed.
Bartmas, meanwhile, has five prior convictions in Butler County for possession of drug paraphernalia, according to court records. He was placed on one year of probation for his most recent conviction in May 2008.
