Driver charged with hitting pedestrian who sustained fractured skull
A man walking to work Nov. 13 in Cranberry Township sustained a fractured skull when he was hit by a sport utility vehicle driven by a woman with a suspended driver’s license, according to police.
Township police filed charges Tuesday, Dec. 10, against Georgetta J. Coleman, 51, alleging she struck the 28-year-old man and didn’t stop.
The victim was found bleeding from his face and kneeling at the base of a utility pole near a plumbing business on Franklin Road. Police said he sustained a fractured skull, bleeding on his brain and other injuries.
An employee of the plumbing business called 911 after seeing the man just before 7:30 a.m. The man was walking to work in Cranberry Commons on Route 228 from his home less than a quarter mile away when he was struck around 6:45 a.m., according to an affidavit.
Several broken vehicle parts found on the shoulder and in the grass along the west side of the road indicated that the man was struck by a southbound vehicle, according to the affidavit. One of the broken parts was from a 2011-2013 Kia Sportage, police added.
Video surveillance showed a silver Kia Sportage with damage to the passenger side headlight assembly turn on to Route 228 from Cranberry Springs Drive at 6:48 a.m. That intersection is about a mile from where the man was found and is a common route for people traveling from Franklin Road to Route 19, police said.
Coleman admitted to driving and hitting something on Franklin Road. She said she didn’t see what it was, but believed it was a deer so she didn’t stop, according to the affidavit.
The SUV front passenger side damage included a broken headlight assembly and trim, a cracked bumper, dented hood and a shattered windshield embedded with what police believe was human hair, according to the affidavit.
Coleman was charged with a felony count of accidents involving injury while not licensed and two summary traffic violations including driving with a suspended license.
