How Butler wrestling’s Kase Chopp accomplished goal of 100 career wins

Butler’s Chopp reaches milestone on mat

Kase Chopp did not begin his varsity wrestling career with a passive mindset.

“I thought of getting to 100 wins immediately,” he said. “My goal that season was to get to 25 and I got 24, but I knew then that I needed to make a lot of improvements and honestly, I’ve gotten better in pretty much every area.”

That progression helped turn Chopp’s aspiration into reality Wednesday night. With a first-round pin of Pine-Richland’s Joey Wozniak at 152 pounds, Butler’s senior became the 13th wrestler in school history to reach 100 career wins. He moved to 7-2 on the season and now owns a varsity record of 100-33.

“I wanted to be part of that club and I’m grateful that I’ve remained healthy the last few years,” he said.

Along with confidence, Butler coach Scott Stoner remembers a physically-gifted Chopp three years ago.

“He was very successful at the lower levels, had some explosive attack moves a lot of kids don’t have, so it was a no-brainer to bring him up to varsity as a freshman,” he said.

Chopp went 69-18 his sophomore and junior seasons, losing by pinfall just twice in that span, but it was how last year ended that added some motivation to his offseason.

“I reached states for the first time and did not medal (with a 1-2 record),” he said. “That was disappointing and I ended up joining Quest Wrestling out of Washington, Pa. I’ve gotten a lot of good work in with them.”

Chopp is hoping a fourth trip to the WPIAL tournament is in his future, as well as a longer run at states. Stoner believes the variables that are in Chopp’s control are in place to do just that.

“He’s very aggressive and gets after it,” he said. “He’s always been good on his feet in the neutral position, but has spent a lot of time working on his moves from the bottom and top.

“One hundred wins is a big deal for kids, but Kase could very well end his high school career with around 130 if he stays healthy.”

Chopp has his sights set on one former wrestler in particular who is ahead of him on Butler’s all-time wins list.

“Blake Caudill (a 2013 Butler graduate), he’s one of our assistant coaches,” he said. “He’s currently second with 128 and I want to beat his total.”

Cole Baxter, a 2011 grad, holds Butler’s record for victories with 160.

The Golden Tornado defeated Pine-Richland 51-20 and improved to 3-0 this season.
