Mass. man charged with taking trade secrets from Cranberry Township management firm

Cranberry Township police filed felony charges against a Massachusetts man claiming he had trade secrets from a township-based management firm after he left that job for a job with one of the firm’s two direct competitors.

Police charged Michael P. Martineau, 45, of Natick, Mass., on Thursday, Dec. 19, with unlawful possession of trade secrets, computer theft and unlawful duplication. A warrant for his arrest has been issued.

An official at Green Cabbage, an analytics, intelligence, negotiation and contract management firm in the township, contacted police about Martineau in October.

Martineau worked as vice president of client delivery from September 2023 through August 2024, and was issued a laptop computer that he returned following his resignation on Aug. 22. A forensic examination of the computer was conducted Sept. 11 by certified computer forensic examiner. He signed a nondisclosure as a part of his employment, according to an affidavit.

While discussing the matter with the examiner and the Green Cabbage official, a detective learned the firm has two director competitors — NPI Financial and Accenture. Martineau was employed as the manager of procurement operations for Accenture from November 2021 through September 2023 and went to work for NPI as director of customer success after leaving Green Cabbage, according to the affidavit.

After getting the job with Green Cabbage, police said Martineau contacted an unidentified person who left Accenture for a job at Green Cabbage and instructed the person to take photos of charts and other information from Accenture that they might be able to use with Green Cabbage, according to the affidavit.

The forensic analysis showed that in March 2024 Martineau accessed files on a removable storage device that were labeled work files from ClearEdge, which was Accenture’s name while Martineau worked there, and saved it on his computer, according to the affidavit.

A proprietary client file from Green Cabbage labeled Aug. 18, 2024, was found in Martineau’s computer, and he maintained over 90 other client dossiers, according to the affidavit.

In addition, a screenshot recording found on the computer showed Green Cabbage’s proprietary training video and Martineau accessed the file on Aug. 21, according to the affidavit.
