Alice Clowes

Clowes

Alice Jean Clowes, 90, passed away peacefully on Thursday evening, Dec. 19, 2024, at UPMC Jameson Memorial Hospital after a short illness.

Alice, also known as “Jeanne,” was born in Tarentum on July 1, 1934. She was the fourth of five children of the late Victor and Irene (Vogley) Darling.

She was a graduate of Winfield-Clinton High School, class of 1953. She married William (Bill) Clowes on Feb. 18, 1956, and they enjoyed almost 54 years of marriage until his passing on Feb. 8, 2010. Following her husband’s employment, Alice and family lived in Saxonburg, Washington, Sarver, Cabot and Chicora before moving to Sharpsville in 1976, and making many lifetime friends along the way. Sharpsville was the final family homestead.

Alice was a member of Christ Lutheran Church in Sharon, and prior to losing her sight, she was one of the church quilters who made quilts donated to Prince of Peace. She also was a volunteer for Meals on Wheels. Alice was a homemaker most of her life and enjoyed bowling, bingo, ceramics, gardening and spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She was a favorite babysitter.

She is survived by her three sons, Edward A. Clowes and his fiancée, Mary White, of Sharon, Donald E. Clowes and his wife, Jodi, of Austintown, Ohio, and James W. Clowes and his wife, Mary Burwell, of Hermitage; six grandchildren, Cecelia Clowes, Kenneth Clowes, Corrine (Joseph) Kuzmanko, Nicholas Clowes, ElizaBeth (Dillon) Streifeneder and Tiffany (Michael) Joseph of Brookfield, Ohio; and seven great-grandchildren, Kiki Hailspock, Ethan Ray, Bailey Holmes, Dominick Kuzmanko, Jasen Kuzmanko, Sydney Kuzmanko and Briana Kuzmanko. She also is survived by her sister-in-law, Janet Darling; her daughter-in-law, Cres Padron, and many nieces and nephews who were special and whom she truly loved. In addition to her parents and her husband, Alice was preceded in death by her siblings and their spouses, Doris (Elton) Macurdy, James (Edith) Darling, Robert (Goldie) Darling and Milton “Butch” Darling.

The family would like to thank the staff at UPMC Jameson Memorial for the exceptional care provided to Alice during her hospital stay. They would also like to thank Frances at Garden Way Place, and Jim and Shirley at Whispering Oaks, who were good friends to her when she resided at those locations. We also thank all of those who prayed for Alice while her health was failing.
