EDCO Park prepares for busy season

2nd bar game fundraiser set

EVANS CITY — The park authority here is hard at work preparing the township recreation facility for a busy spring and summer.

Cindy Caldwell, chairwoman of the EDCO Park Authority, said the rusted metal partitions between the stalls in the park’s bathhouse have been removed. She said authority volunteers are currently painting the rear wall and showers before new partitions are installed.

Caldwell also said the Evans City Rotary Club is having the bathhouse floors replaced.

Other planned improvements include the addition of railings to the pool steps and a new surface on the basketball court. Caldwell said the authority applied for an $8,000 county grant to complete the projects, but she said grant recipients will not be announced until May.

She said the new stall partitions and pool railings will be installed even if the grant is not received, as the railings are required under the Americans with Disabilities Act, and the partitions had severely rusted.

Caldwell said the authority is currently looking at additional grants that could fund lighting, seating and other updates at the basketball courts.

Caldwell said registration is under way for the authority’s second annual Bar Game Olympics, set for April 30. She said the fundraiser was well received last year, and the authority is hoping for 100 players in the 2011 games.

Caldwell said participants can park their vehicles at the Evans City VFW at 5 p.m., where they can register for the games and enjoy a kickoff celebration. They will be transported via a Steelers bus to one of Evans City’s four taverns, where they will play a game of shuffleboard, pool, darts or corn hole.

Participants are bused to all four establishments in rotation so that all involved play all four games. All participants end up back at the V.F.W., where a tie-breaking game of hillbilly golf is played if necessary.

Prizes are then awarded to participants for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place in the games. Caldwell said each establishment will have drink specials during the event.

Other prize-winning opportunities are available at the event, including a poker hand in which each player receives a card from each of the four establishments. The player with the best poker hand at the end of the tavern tour wins a prize.

A 50/50 raffle and drawings for several high-end door prizes also will be featured.

“Everyone had a great time last year,” Caldwell said. “We raised $2,000.”

She said all proceeds from the event will benefit the park. Those interested can register for $20 per person by accessing the online flyer at www.edcopark.com, or by calling or texting Renee at 724-822-7936.

Cost is $30 per person at the door on the night of the competition.

Caldwell said the park authority also is excited about the addition of a new board member.

Jill Perry, a new Evans City resident, recently joined the authority board. Caldwell said Perry and her husband appreciate small-town life, and enjoy getting involved in groups that help preserve that lifestyle.

She said Perry has experience in grant writing, which will come in handy for the authority as it attempts to complete ongoing projects and fund new ones.

“We are hoping to utilize her that way,” she said.

Caldwell said Perry also is unafraid to get her hands dirty in the borough.

“She is helping with the painting at the park right now,” Caldwell said. “Brains and beauty, she’s got it all.”

EDCO Park features a swimming pool, playground, horseshoe pit, and basketball, volleyball and shuffleboard courts. Caldwell said a new feature at the park this year is the tetherball court donated by the Szwaczkowski family.
