Burglary arrest aided by neighbor

A suspected burglar faces a hearing next week on charges he broke into a Butler home Saturday night.

Butler police said they caught 49-year-old Thomas J. Reges red-handed and hiding in the house he used to rent in the 100 block of West Campbell Avenue.

Reges, who has no known address, was arraigned Sunday on charges of burglary, theft and criminal mischief, and placed in the Butler County Prison on $5,000 bail.

A neighbor saw someone in the backyard of the house and called 911, police said. The caller moments later reported hearing glass shattering.

Officers got there and found a pile of glass at the rear of the rental home owned by Raymond Oesterling.

Police said they went inside and searched for the suspect. They found Reges crouched behind a bedroom door holding two copper pipes connected to faucet parts that had been cut, according to court documents.

Reges is a former tenant at the house, police said. Oesterling, however, said that currently there are no tenants at the house.

A preliminary hearing for Reges is set for 9:30 a.m. Monday at the office of District Judge Pete Shaffer.
