High school roundup: Josh Book drops 42 points, grabs 17 rebounds in Slippery Rock basketball’s OT win

Josh Book added another chapter to his already storied career Thursday night.

Against Mercyhurst Prep, Slippery Rock’s senior forward posted 42 points and 17 rebounds to lead the Rockets to an 85-76 boys basketball win in overtime.

Doug Popovec and Max Kovacik both scored 16 points for Slippery Rock (8-4).

Girls basketball

Vita Vargo (20 points) and Cecilia Christy (15) combined for 35 points as Mars thumped New Castle 62-31 Thursday.

The win snapped a two-game skid for Mars (7-4, 2-2). Vargo needs 47 points to reach 1,000 for her varsity career.

Karns City 45, Moniteau 23 Naomi Venesky and Brooklynn Taylor scored 13 and 11 points, respectively, in the Gremlins’ victory over their rivals.

Emily Matz and Maddy Eury scored eight and seven, respectively, for the Warriors (3-11).

KC (11-1) sank seven 3-pointers, five of them in the first quarter. Hanna Dailey chipped in eight points on two treys.

North Catholic 65, Knoch 22 — A trio of Trojanettes (11-2, 6-0) powered North to this section victory.

Brady Wehner drained three treys and paced her team with 19 points. Sam Weir added 14 points and Mackenzie James 11.

Neah Ewing scored 12 points for Knoch (4-8, 3-2).

North Clarion 59, Union/A-C Valley 32 — Maddy Dehart erupted for 24 of the Falcon Knights’ points and grabbed 14 rebounds. Emma Raschiotore chipped in six points.

Seneca Valley 48, Woodland Hills 21 — The Raiders led 21-8 after one quarter in this rout of the Wolverines.

SV (9-4, 4-0) received 19 points from Natalie Hambly and 12 courtesy of Gracie Cato.

Swimming

Tessa Szymanski won the 100-yard freestyle and contributed to victories in the 200 and 400 freestyle relays in a 112-38 win against Sharon.

Cody Hartle took first place in the breaststroke as the Rockets and Tigers swam to a 53-53 tie.

North Hills 100, Mars 69 (boys) — No other details were provided from this loss for the Planets.

Mars 98, North Hills 84 (girls) The Planets’ girls got past the Indians. No other details were provided.

Rifle

Butler topped Penn-Trafford 799(64x)-782(47x). No other details were provided.
