PennDOT, Pennsylvania Turnpike urge caution for coming winter weather

Winter Weather

The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation and Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission are advising motorists to avoid unnecessary travel on Sunday, Jan. 19, when snowfall rates may reach three-quarters of an inch per hour.

PennDOT and the Turnpike will also implement various speed and vehicle restrictions throughout the storm. The agencies are urging people to exercise caution if they have to drive during the storm, according to a joint news release posted on Saturday.

While PennDOT and Turnpike crews will be working to keep roads as clear as possible, roads will not be completely free of ice and snow while snow is falling. Temperatures are expected to drop quickly Sunday evening, creating a rapid freeze risk.

Pennsylvanians are reminded that dangerously cold weather is forecast for much of the commonwealth after the storm. Yesterday, the Shapiro Administration shared information on cold-related health and travel concerns.
