Slippery Rock mayor nominated Pennsylvania mayor of the year
SLIPPERY ROCK— Borough council voted unanimously to nominate Jondavid Longo for the Association of the Boroughs of Pennsylvania’s Albert Montecalvo Mayor of the Year Award at a meeting on Tuesday, Jan. 21.
“I’m grateful to have the trust and confidence of my colleagues and partners on council and flattered to earn their nomination for three years in a row,” Longo said. “This nomination is a testament to them and to the citizens of Slippery Rock who make our community great.”
Longo himself was not present for the council meeting, as he was in Washington D.C. after attending Donald J. Trump’s presidential inauguration.
“It was an honor to be invited to attend the inauguration of president Trump and vice president Vance after campaigning with them and their incredible team,” the mayor said.
He claimed he has been “an ardent supporter” of Trump since 2015, and that his family has spent years supporting the America First initiative “while enduring vicious attacks from leftists.”
“I could think of no better way to celebrate our historic win for America than to travel to our nation’s capitol to enjoy the festivities,” he said. “I’m proud to have participated and witnessed such history.”
Longo, Slippery Rock’s youngest mayor in history, has been in the public eye the past year. He received national attention after he found himself in close proximity to an assassination attempt on Trump and was able to cast an electoral vote for Pennsylvania in the 2024 presidential election.
“He's done a lot for the community,” council president Jeff Campbell said. “He gives back his salary… he’s always out putting good plugs for Slippery Rock… I think he’s deserving [of the nomination].”
A resolution shared at the meeting, ordinance no. 48, outlined the council’s decision.
“Mayor Longo has gone above and beyond living out his motto, ‘Service Over Self by executive his mayoral duties as a statesman, ambassador, and leader for Slippery Rock and her surrounding communities,” the resolution states.
It also notes that Longo has donated 100% of his mayoral salary to the Slippery Rock community and raised over $100,000 for the same cause.
He has also increased focus on local business and community engagement.
“Mayor Longo has proposed, executed and maintained our annual Independence Day Celebration (complete with fireworks), Oktoberfest and a new vision for Slippery Rock’s Light Up Night; each complete with free spots for Slippery Rock registered businesses to vend as encouragement for local commerce,” the resolution said.
It also cites Longo’s relationship with local police, efforts to honor community veterans and several other reasons the council believes he is Pennsylvania’s mayor of the year.
“Thanks to [the council] and their willingness to work in lockstep with me, we have achieved great things for Slippery Rock,” Longo said.
