• Chris Carpenter, Cardinals, threw a four-hit shutout and St. Louis beat Cincinnati 5-0.

• Johan Santana, Twins, struck out nine and allowed just three hits in eight shutout innings to help Minnesota beat Cleveland 4-1.

• Matt Murton, Cubs, hit a game-tying homer in the ninth inning and a two-run single in the 18th, leading Chicago to an 8-6 victory over Houston.

EXTRAS

Luis Gonzalez singled to drive in Eric Byrnes with one out in the 18th inning, and Arizona beat Colorado 2-1 Tuesday night in the longest game in Rockies history. The game lasted 5 hours, 21 minutes. Before Tuesday, the Rockies' longest game was a 15-inning, 4-2 win at the Chicago Cubs in the second game of a doubleheader on July 4, 1994. The longest game by time previously was a 6-5 win against Montreal on April 27, 1996, that took 4:51. ... Matt Murton hit a two-run single in the 18th, sending the Chicago Cubs to an 8-6 victory over Houston in the longest regular-season game in Minute Maid Park history. The Astros also lost an 18-inning game in Pittsburgh on May 27, while the Cubs won their longest game since Aug. 6, 1989, when they lost 5-4 to the Pirates in 18 innings.

STREAKING

The Los Angeles Dodgers beat Florida 4-0 on Tuesday night for their sixth straight victory and 17th in 18 games. The last NL team to win 17 of 18 games was the 1986 New York Mets, who went on to win the World Series. No team in franchise history had won 17 of 18 since the Brooklyn Superbas went 20-1 during one stretch in 1899.

NO PLACE LIKE THE DOME

Johan Santana threw eight shutout innings, allowing just three hits and striking out nine in Minnesota's 4-1 win over Cleveland on Monday night. Santana (14-5) has not lost in the MetroDome since Aug. 6, 2005, going 12-0 in his last 19 starts. It's the best such streak for a Twins pitcher since Frank Viola when 19-0 in 24 home starts from 1987-88.

STRONG IN DEFEAT

Jose Reyes homered three times in the New York Mets' 11-4 loss to Philadelphia on Tuesday night. Reyes became the seventh player to hit three homers in a game for the Mets. Edgardo Alfonzo was the last Mets player to hit accomplish the feat, doing it at Houston on Aug. 30, 1999. All seven Mets to homer three times in a game did it on the road.

We know what it takes to get there." — Twins center fielder Torii Hunter on teammate Johan Santana after Minnesota's 4-1 victory over Cleveland on Tuesday night. Santana threw eight shutout innings of three-hit ball.

Aug. 16

1920 — Shortstop Ray Chapman of the Cleveland Indians was hit in the head with a pitch in the fifth inning by New York's Carl Mays. Chapman fractured his skull and died the next day. It is the only field fatality in major league history.

1927 — Babe Ruth of the New York Yankees became the first player to clear the roof at Comiskey Park in Chicago. Ruth's home run came off White Sox pitcher Tommy Thomas in the 8-1 win.

1947 — Ralph Kiner hit three successive home runs to become the first Pirates player to accomplish the feat as Pittsburgh beat the St. Louis Cardinals 12-7 at Forbes Field.

1948 — Babe Ruth died of cancer in New York, at the age of 53.

1950 — Hank Thompson hit two inside-the-park home runs in the Giants' 16-7 rout of the Brooklyn Dodgers at the Polo Grounds.

1964 — Curt Flood of the St. Louis Cardinals had eight straight hits in a doubleheader against the Los Angeles Dodgers. The Dodgers won the first game 3-0 and the Cardinals took the second, 4-0.

1967 — Jim Maloney of Cincinnati retired 19 consecutive Pirates but had to leave the game after he injured his ankle by stepping in a hole at Forbes Field. Billy McCool allowed two hits over the final 2 innings to give the Reds a 4-0 victory over Pittsburgh.

1996 — With 23,699 fans at the 25,644-seat Estadio Monterrey, the San Diego Padres defeated the New York Mets 15-10 in the first major league regular-season game played outside the United States or Canada.

2005 — Bobby Bragan became the oldest manager of a pro baseball game when the 87-year-old managed the Fort Worth Cats of the Central League for one game against Coastal Bend. Hall of Famer Connie Mack previously held the record, but Bragan eclipsed Mack by eight days. Bragan was tossed out of the game in the third inning after he went on the field following the ejection of a player.
