MARS — A heavy load may have been the cause of the two-vehicle crash Thursday morning that injured one person on Route 228.

The crash occurred about 8:30 a.m. at the intersection at Route 228 and Brickyard Road by Mars Primary Center when a dump truck traveling eastbound rear-ended a flatbed truck.

The dump truck suffered major front-end damage on the driver’s side.

“He was trapped for about 20 minutes or so,” said Chief Curt Huffman of the Callery Volunteer Fire Department about the driver of the dump truck.

The driver was taken to a hospital by a Callery EMS ambulance.

Huffman said the driver was “alert and oriented” as he was being extricated from the truck.

The flatbed truck had minor rear-end damage and drove away after being assisted by firefighters. That driver was not injured.

Eastbound traffic on Route 228 was stopped for about an hour. Those traveling westbound were redirected to Brickyard Road.

The dump truck was towed away shortly after 9:30 a.m., about the same time traffic on both sides started moving slowly on Route 228.

Robert Scanlon, assistant chief for the Adams Township Police Department, said the crash is under investigation.

However, he said the dump truck was 2,500 pounds overweight and the police department was applying for a search warrant to further inspect the vehicle.

Scanlon said the flatbed was stopped for a vehicle in front of it trying to turn left onto Brickyard Road when the dump truck crashed into it.

“We don’t know for sure yet,” Scanlon said of the exact cause.

Names of those involved in the crash have not been released.
