Butler boys wrestling team ousted from WPIAL team tournament by Bethel Park

BETHEL PARK — The longer you stay in a championship tournament, the stiffer the competition becomes.

It makes sense … and it made for a frustrating visit to Bethel Park High School for Butler’s boys wrestling team.

Two days after defeating Belle Vernon by 33 points in a WPIAL Class 3A preliminary-round match, the Golden Tornado found themselves on the opposite end of an overwhelming performance.

Bethel Park took command early in seven of the 11 contested bouts and tallied five pins in a 50-10 victory in Wednesday’s first-round meeting.

“Timing and situational decisions, when to make a move, they sound like small details, but when you’re facing a team as good as (Bethel Park), you need to take your shots when they’re there. You have to go after it and if you don’t, it shows,” Butler coach Scott Stoner said.

The Black Hawks (10-1) feature five 20-plus win wrestlers on their roster. Four of them were in action against Butler and they all won.

Bethel Park is a difficult team to score big on. It has suffered losses via technical fall or pin just 60 combined times this season. Conversely, its wrestlers have won such bouts 134 times.

Two of the former came Wednesday thanks to the efforts of Butler’s Santino Sloboda and Kase Chopp.

Wrestling at 127 pounds, Sloboda remained unbeaten (26-0) this season with a 20-5 technical fall over Colton Fisher.

Chopp took care of Caleb Crawford by a score of 21-5 at 145 pounds. That win moved Chopp to 26-6 on the season and cut Bethel’s lead to 19-10, but the Black Hawks swept the remaining six bouts.

The Tornado (8-4) return to action Friday by hosting North Hills.

“We have a few (team competitions) left, will be going to the Pine-Richland Duals (Feb. 8),” Stoner said. “We may be out of the tournament, but these late-season matches are important. As a team, we have not reached our potential and you want to see signs of progress by the end of the season. Also, we need to get our wrestlers ready for individuals and you don’t want to be beating each other up in the practice room for three weeks.”
