Route 28 lanes remain closed
PITTSBURGH — The inbound lanes of Route 28, a major thoroughfare into the city, will remain closed until Monday morning because of a landslide, state transportation officials said Thursday.
About 1,000 cubic yards of dirt and other debris fell from the hill early Thursday morning, closing the entire highway for a time. The northbound lanes out of the city were reopened before rush hour because they were not covered with much debris.
The southbound lanes will remain closed while a contractor removes debris and works to stabilize the hillside.
"Geotechnical engineers think the rest of it up there has the potential to come down," PennDOT spokesman Jim Struzzi said.
Inbound traffic will continue to be detoured across the Highland Park Bridge.
