Woman accused of trespassing at Butler school
A woman was charged with trespassing on school grounds after she entered a Butler Area School District building in the city.
Police were dispatched at 3:30 a.m. Wednesday, Feb. 5, to the Center Avenue Community School after a custodian encountered an unknown woman in the building.
Police said the woman, who appeared to be experiencing a mental health episode, entered the school through an unlocked door near the Lincoln Avenue entrance.
Police charged Mandy Jo McCarthy with a misdemeanor count of trespassing on school grounds. She was seen on camera walking throughout the school, the affidavit said.
McCarthy was put in Butler County prison in lieu of $5,000 bond.
Superintendent Brian White said it appeared the door was forced open, and the district has made repairs so the door is secure. He said it was disappointing someone was able to get in but praised the district resource officers and Butler city police for their swift response.
McCarthy has a preliminary hearing scheduled for 8:30 a.m. Monday, Feb. 10, before District Judge William Fullerton.
