How Karns City’s Shane Peters reached 1,000 points as Gremlins chase postseason berth

The path to 1,000 career points was a pretty unique one for Shane Peters.

With a layup in the first quarter of Wednesday's 62-42 win against North Clarion, Karns City's senior forward reached the milestone.

"Shane has been a major contributor for us since his sophomore year, but just because of the personnel we had the last couple of years, this is actually his first year as a full-time starter," KC coach Zach Kepple said. "That's crazy to think about."

Peters, who’s 6-foot-5, scored just seven varsity points his freshman year, but made vast improvement during the 2022-23 campaign.

"That's the year I thought getting to a thousand was within my reach," he said. "I just kept working toward it since then. I needed 400 points this season to get it and thought it would be tough."

But he has maintained a furious pace this winter, averaging over 20 points per game. He scored 26 in Wednesday's victory.

"He's put up almost 20 and 20 (between points and rebounds) over the last couple weeks," Kepple said. "He's added inside moves and that has made a big difference for him. His up-and-under move is almost unstoppable. He can go either left or right with it. He has a nice 10- to 12-foot jumper and is very difficult to defend."

Kepple also said that Peters has more offensive rebounds this year than total rebounds controlled by the team's No.2 player on the boards.

Karns City (9-11) won just four of its first 12 games, but can grab a District 9 playoff spot with wins in its final two games against Union and Keystone.

"We weren't playing together as a team earlier in the season," Peters said. "But we're now playing with a lot of confidence and want to keep it going."
